exactly is a writing center?”
I get that
question a lot when I talk about the happenings at Word’s Worth Writing Center. Usually I give an answer somewhere between,
“It’s a place that deals with all things writing,” or “I’m still trying to figure that out.”
Don’t get me wrong, I DO know what a writing center is. At times it’s just hard to explain a vision as big as
mine to people.
Honestly, I think you can learn most about what Word’s Worth Writing Center is
by the people who have come through its doors during the past year:
· A 13 year-old novelist who wrote a science fiction novel two summers
ago and worked on the sequel to it this past summer.
· An adult fiction writing class with a talented poet trying fiction
for her first time, a woman desiring to write “trashy romance novels,” and an inspired writer who brought new
chapters to every class.
A sister and brother
in a Writer’s Get Up and Go workshop. She bought the class for him as a birthday present.
A writer in his 80’s,
looking to fulfill his dream of being published.
· A summer fiction class of five artistic teenagers who admired each
other’s writing and worked hard to perfect creative and talented works of fiction.
· A middle school writer needing help with direction
and organization in her writing. She recently brought in her first writing assignment of the school year. She got an A.
A busy and dedicated
mother trying to find time in her hectic life to be a freelance writer. She is currently still trying to write that first
These are just a few of the people I’ve
had the pleasure to work with in my first year at Word’s Worth Writing Center. I look forward to another year of more
